Democracy: does it have a future? A discussion on representative democracy in Hannah Arendt

Abstract

Considering that we are going through times of profound distrust in democracy, as well as despair regarding institutionalized politics, this article will resort to the theory of the thinker Hannah Arendt in order to rescue the principles of republicanism. Although the German thinker did not directly address this theme in her texts, we understand that it is possible to glimpse in her theory how our democracy can still contribute to the construction of a world that is common to all people. We agree with Arendt in defending that political representation is a gain for humanity. What the representative system lacks is the expansion of popular participation through smaller participatory instances that can have their demands forwarded to higher instances. In other words, we believe that a non-centralized system, not restricted to party bureaucracy, can give rise to a real republican democracy.
