Abstract

This text presents an study on Augustinian ethics from his work On Free Choice of the Will. This philosopher understood that man had free will as an important part of his nature as rational and animal-distinct being. Through free Will man is responsible for his own actions, good or bad. Free will was given to man by god for a good purpose, that is, a virtuous life. When man does not achieve this goal, he practices moral evil acts. A virtuous life consists in rational domination over passions through his good will. Happiness or unhappiness is consequence from good or bad usage of free will. In order to live correctly, man must leave material and transitory goods and turns himself to the Supreme Good, that is God, and so he will profit a virtuous life. The text was written in an objective and clear form, in order to reach a better comprehension on Augustinian ethical philosophy. This kind of thematic is important due to a moral and ethics crisis we are living today. If this ethical problem is argued since philosophy beginning, Augustine of Hippo’s reflections on it still shows us a relevant interpretation about this phenomenon.
